The Power of Effortlessness
Caught in the Cycle of Trying Harder? Transcend Struggle and Embrace a Life of Ease, Fulfillment, and Alignment.
Are You Pushing Through Life or Flowing With It?
As I write this article, I’m sat in a log cabin in the middle of a forest with an open fire, just finishing my week of rest and recuperation with my wife.
Before I came away…
I noticed on social media and from speaking with people a couple of themes in relation to being successful, that I wanted to speak into today:
“Hectic is good.”
“Pushing through.”
“Just keep trying.”
Now, there’s an interesting truth about these, which we will delve into later.
A Moment of Reflection
I remember a time when I was trying to be successful and prove something to others, and I agreed to go to this workshop on the other side of America called Transcendence.
The coaches at this workshop were successful and world-class, and it was a life-changing event for people's lives and businesses.
The leader of Transcendence invited me to go, and I said "yes," but something within me felt conflicted.
For a large part of my life, this old pattern was still there to prove something to myself and others. Was I doing this for myself or others?
As the flight got closer and closer, I started to collect evidence to justify my decision.
Even after I made the choice, I was collecting information to prove this was the right decision for me, even though intuitively I knew it wasn’t.
Can you relate?
I wanted to prove I was a successful, world-class coach like the others in this group and not be left out of the group.
What Are You Running From?
I remember years ago when I helped a friend transform his life and relationships by recommending a seminar that changed not only his life but other people's lives too.
On day two of the seminar, he rang me when he was having second thoughts, as the workshop was challenging him to look inward and face himself.
In that moment, I didn’t know what to say, so I paused for five seconds, and the words came.
I said: “If you run now, you’ll be running for the rest of your life.”
There was a long pause and he said: ”I am going back.”
At that point, he was two days into a three-day workshop. The next day, he drove back to the seminar, and on that final day, he had a life-changing insight that transformed not only his life but his whole family’s life.
What are you running from?
The Turning Point
As I was speaking to my mentor, I asked for support in figuring out whether I had made the right choice in going to this event. At one point, my personal mind was in conflict with my deeper mind.
I remember telling my mentor the story of my friend, the one I stood for over that three-day workshop, and the insight that came to me was:
"If I run now, I’ll be running for the rest of my life."
And I mistakenly believed that insight was related to me getting on a flight, traveling halfway around the world to attend Transcendence. But the truth is, that wasn’t my transcendence.
Life Had Other Plans
Two days before I was supposed to travel, an email came in.
"Sorry from British Airways, but your flight has been cancelled. We can book you on the next flight, which leaves on the same day as the event."
This meant I would arrive with no sleep and exhausted.
That little phrase came back into my head.
“If you run now, you will be running for the rest of your life.”
But this time, I saw it differently.
Instead of running toward pushing through, earnest effort, and this energy of trying, I saw the truth.
The Illusion of Trying
Trying can become trying, right?
And the only reason people believe:
Hectic is good.
Let’s push through.
Just keep trying.
...is this: They are trying to prove something to others.
What are you trying to prove, and to whom?
So, I quietened down, and it was as clear as day. The decision I had to make.
The truth was, I am already successful, and a world-class coach. I didn’t have to fly to the other side of the world to prove that to others or myself, so I chose not to go.
With that email from British Airways, life had just gifted me a pause.
Questions for You
When you have moments of pause, when new choices or decisions arise, do you push through?
Or do you take time to reflect on what’s truly in your best interest?
Where are you world-class or successful in life?
Many people are not intentional with their lives. They are not creating their life; they are living the life others want them to live.
I am living an intentional and created life. But sometimes, I used to get caught up in the plans of others to prove something.
Are you intentionally creating your life?
Effort vs. Effortlessness
One of the biggest habits I transcended after not going to Transcendence was this notion of effortlessness vs. effort.
I began allowing this sense of effortlessness to permeate my business, my relationships, my spirituality, my health and fitness, every area of my life. I let go of this earnest effort.
Now, the lion’s share of my time, I’m intentional about coming from effortlessness, and I feel more fulfilled and happy in all areas of my life. Are you?
Of course, I’m human, and I still feel effort and trying sometimes creep back in. But when I do, I shift my focus back to effortlessness and create from there.
Imagine This...
If you were to stop trying, what would that be like?
Can you imagine?
Think about an area of your life that feels like effort.
You’re trying to make it better.
You’re trying to make it work.
You’re trying to make it successful.
Maybe that trying has even delivered some results.
But…
What would happen if you let go?
If you continued to seek the important changes you wanted, but you let go of the trying and effort, what would happen?
Final Thoughts
As I said at the start of this post, when we glamorize these ideas:
Hectic is good.
Pushing through.
Just keep trying.
…you end up reacting to life.
You seek the approval of others.
Your life becomes about effort.
Instead of this…
Responding to life.
Living true to yourself.
Coming from a state of effortlessness.
The truth is…
Being successful is not about effort, a hectic life, and pushing through.
Being successful is about effortlessness, fulfillment, and energy alignment.
Both are available to you. Which one are you going to consciously choose?
Thank you for being with me today.
